JM and I worked with the adorable Ali Collier right when she moved to Los Angeles almost 2 years ago. We were so happy when she agreed to do our first Holiday Inspired shoot with looks that help you feel festive and gorgeous.
Ali takes great care of herself and it shows in her flawless skin. I prepped and primed her with my favorite Glossier Priming Moisturizer which I cannot recommend enough. If you go over to their website, they even do a monthly delivery service because you will use this daily and run out.
Lips were first exfoliated using Sara Happ’s Brown Sugar Lip Scrub. I’ve tried other lip scrubs and always come back to Sara’s. It was her first product she developed for her line and done with perfection. The peppermint is also a fave flavor. A layer of Glossier’s Balm Dotcom, which is actually a salve so it has moisturizer AND healing properties to prepare the lips for serious color.
For both looks below, a sheer layer of Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint in a mix of Light and Medium was used. This tint is lightweight, can be layered and built up for more coverage but is well pigmented that you don’t need much to even out your tone. Perfect for daily wear.
Look 1 - Inspired by old holiday films when the go to makeup look was a brown eye and red lip, our first look is a contemporary version of that. To get an eye with this depth and longevity to last through the night, the trick is to layer products.
Begin with a wash of Marc Jacobs Twinkle Pop Eyeshadow Stick in Three Shakes, a gorgeous copper shade. These sticks feel like a gel on the eyes, have a cooling effect and are a fantastic product alone or as a base for more. On top of this is a layer of the gold shimmer shadow from the Nars Kauai Duo, this gave the shadow an extra dimension of shimmer from beneath, a glow from below if you will. Finally on top is a layer of ColourPop’s Game Face shadow, a brilliant copper that can be worn more sheer or built up as a liquid ultra metallic shade.
For red lips that last through the night, begin with a liquid lipstick like Tarte’s Tartiest Lip Paint in Bae. You can stick with just this if you prefer a matte lip, but we wanted to add that holiday shine, so we added a coat of Nars Lip Gloss in Scandal, a sheer crushed cherry red that should be a staple in anyones kit or makeup bag that loves a red lip. Perfect for adding a touch of moisture without being too glossy or sticky.
Look 2 - Finally a chance to use the gorgeous mink lashes from Artémes that I have been hanging on to all year! This look is all about great lashes, a strong lip and a really cool brow as an accent.
The scene stealer here are the gorgeous mink lashes from Artémes in style Enlighten Me, which is a medium volume lash with a blend of brown and black tones to help keep the subtlety. This is important to me for my style of makeup, I prefer washes of color, things that blend and go well with an overall look as opposed to making a screaming statement. Mascara was applied to Ali’s regular lashes but not the faux lash to keep it subtle. These lashes can be worn up to 25 times if properly cared for, so they are worth the investment!
My favorite trend of mine is the metallic brow. I think it’s an amazing way to add a pop of metallic without being overpowering, but still being extremely modern and cool. Ali had platinum hair already so silver brows almost look natural on her! I combed a combination of Mac’s Silver Metallic pigment and a metallic cream from Kryolan through her lashes using a clean disposable mascara wand. You could also do this with just the pigment and a gloss or clear mascara. I just like how the cream spreads through the lash and blends in rather than being overly harsh.
